Facts about childhood cancer

  • Everyday 700 children around the world are diagnosed with cancer – a disease that touches countless families and communities in all regions of the world. 
  • Of the 250 000 children who are diagnosed with cancer each year, about 90 000 will lose their lives to the disease. 
  • Many of the children who survive get to live their lives with severe late effects as a result of both disease and treatment. 
  • When an adult develops cancer, it is often related to lifestyle or external factors. In children, the disease often develops very quickly – and no one knows why children and teens develop cancer.
